To be admitted to vote, the voter must:

• be an Italian citizen;
• be at least 18 years of age by election day;
• be duly registered with AIRE, the Register of Italians Residing Abroad;
• have been resident in the competent consular district for at least six months;
• not be subject to any legal restriction, suspension or loss of voting rights.

Before submitting the voting request, voters should verify that:

• their residential address is complete and correct;
• their Eircode is entered correctly;
• their personal contact details are up to date.

Submitting this request is the essential step for admission to the vote.

Registration with AIRE alone does not automatically result in inclusion in the electoral register. Each interested citizen must submit a specific request to the Embassy or the competent consular office asking to be included in the list of eligible voters. This request is commonly referred to as the “option”.

As a general rule, the application must be accompanied by:

• a copy of a valid Italian identity document, such as a passport or identity card;
• a duly completed and signed form, where required by the official instructions.

The request for inclusion in the electoral register must be submitted by the deadline established by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and communicated by the Embassy of Italy.

Once the request has been accepted:

• the consular office will send the electoral pack by post;
• the pack will be delivered to the address recorded with AIRE.

The voter must:

• complete the ballot paper strictly in accordance with the enclosed instructions;
• place the ballot paper in the designated envelope;
• return the electoral pack to the consular office by the stated deadline.
